Ain't no cure for the Summertime Blues
Monday, July 26, 2010
What a catchy tune, huh! (See title of blog). But seriously, what has happened to volume in the past few months? Did everyone put everything on pause? Phone calls are down more than 30%* comparing July to June, and even worse, traditional advertising doesn't seem to be working. Many practice throw their faith into Social media, which is always a disappointment. Yes I said it, no one else will. So, what is the answer? The answer is to be careful. Why do we spend money on advertising? Simple. To make more money. There is a reason practices go dark during certain periods, and this is one of them. I recommend using this time to streamline internal operations. Go through all of the charts of patients that didn't convert and then call,...

Making the most of it Nationwide, there has been a slow and steady decline in LASIK volume to around "700,000 procedures from the 1.4 million performed about two years ago," said Richard L. Lindstrom, M.D., adjunct professor emeritus, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; founder, Minnesota Eye Consultants, Minneapolis; and member, ASCRS Refractive Clinical Committee. With most practices having their best quarters in the first quarter, "the next real chance for a turnaround isn't going to be seen until 2010," he said. In his practice, LASIK volume is off about 30% to 35%. For many surgeons and many practices, "the current economic state is an environment people hav...
As targeted refractive patients fade, both older, younger groups rise
Friday, December 04, 2009
The recession is keeping Generation X patients from spending money, but Baby Boomers and Generation Y are picking up some of the slack The recession has been detrimental to refractive practices reducing volume by as much as 50% in some of the more dramatic situations. One reason the recession has been so damaging is that the traditional market-carrying patient has been the hardest hit by the recession, said Daniel S. Durrie, M.D., clinical professor of ophthalmology, University of Kansas, Overland Park, Kan. But he said that while the 30- to 45-year-old patient demographic has been more reluctant, increases in the number of 18- to 24-year-old patients and older-than-45 crowd give him reason to be optimistic about the f...
